{"id":3149,"date":"2012-10-01T08:36:38","date_gmt":"2012-10-01T06:36:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.military-history.us\/?p=3149"},"modified":"2012-10-07T12:11:35","modified_gmt":"2012-10-07T10:11:35","slug":"battle-of-the-nations-monument-leipzig-germany","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.military-history.us\/2012\/10\/battle-of-the-nations-monument-leipzig-germany\/","title":{"rendered":"Battle of the Nations Monument &#8211; Leipzig, Germany"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I had the opportunity to visit Leipzig this past weekend and while there stopped briefly by the monument to the 1813<a href=\"http:\/\/www.historyofwar.org\/articles\/battles_leipzig.html\"> Battle of the Nations<\/a> from the Napoleonic Wars. \u00c2\u00a0At the Battle of the Nations the <em>Sixth Coalition<\/em> consisting of Prussia, Britain, Russia, and Austria\u00c2\u00a0fought\u00c2\u00a0the French Army of Napoleon and over the course of three days defeated him and forced him to retreat back to\u00c2\u00a0France.<\/p>\n<p>I only had about 20\u00c2\u00a0minutes\u00c2\u00a0at the monument and Leipzig is on my list of places to see\u00c2\u00a0again\u00c2\u00a0as one day was not enough to see all that I wanted to see. \u00c2\u00a0The\u00c2\u00a0monument\u00c2\u00a0is currently undergoing renovation in\u00c2\u00a0preparation\u00c2\u00a0for events\u00c2\u00a0surrounding\u00c2\u00a0the 200th anniversary of the Battle next year. It is maintained by a private charity the\u00c2\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.voelkerschlachtdenkmal.de\/joomla\/index.php\">F\u00c3\u00b6rderverein V\u00c3\u00b6lkerschlachtdenkmal e.V.<\/a>\u00c2\u00a0(in German). \u00c2\u00a0It is huge and you can walk\u00c2\u00a0inside\u00c2\u00a0it to the top of the monument, but I didn&#8217;t have time to do so. \u00c2\u00a0The <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Monument_to_the_Battle_of_the_Nations\">Wikipedia entry<\/a> about the monument is fairly decent. \u00c2\u00a0The monument is supposed to be located at the site of one of the bloodiest parts of the battle and near or at where Napoleon ordered the retreat of the French Army. The water in the reflecting poll is pretty muddy, which kind of ruins the effect.
