{"id":5863,"date":"2016-06-06T06:25:24","date_gmt":"2016-06-06T04:25:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.military-history.us\/?p=5863"},"modified":"2016-06-05T08:52:25","modified_gmt":"2016-06-05T06:52:25","slug":"d-day-72nd-anniversary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.military-history.us\/2016\/06\/d-day-72nd-anniversary\/","title":{"rendered":"D-Day 72nd Anniversary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>This is an annual tradition at Battles and Book Reviews. \u00a0This year is the 72nd anniversary of the Allied Landings at Normandy in France during WWII.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Just a reminder for everyone to stop today and take a moment to reflect on the events that happened 68 years ago today on the shores of Normandy in France. \u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.military-history.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/capa-beach-of-normandy-D-Day.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2823 aligncenter\" title=\"capa beach of normandy D-Day\" src=\"http:\/\/www.military-history.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/capa-beach-of-normandy-D-Day.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"459\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.military-history.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/capa-beach-of-normandy-D-Day.jpg 459w, https:\/\/www.military-history.us\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/06\/capa-beach-of-normandy-D-Day-300x196.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 459px) 100vw, 459px\" \/><\/a>This is the day that the Allies opened up the long-awaited Second Front against Hitler&#8217;s Germany. \u00a0 The invasion took place along almost 50 miles of French coast using five named invasion beaches. \u00a0 From south to north the beaches were named Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword. \u00a0 The first days objectives were not reached over most of the front and in many places it would take weeks to reach objectives that were supposed to have been taken in the first hours. \u00a0 Below you can hear some of the veterans themselves describe their experiences.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/CnhcMXoftp4\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>As an added bonus and to highlight the gravity of what was accomplished This year I have added a very interesting infographic about the landings that I found recently at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.history.com\/\">History.com<\/a><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/cdn.history.com\/sites\/2\/2014\/06\/D-Day-infographic-revised-6-3.png\" width=\"1000\" height=\"3038\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Incidentally, If you made it all the way to the bottom of this post. \u00a0This post was timed to publish at the exact moment that the first tanks of C and B Companies of the 743rd Cavalry came ashore on\u00a0Dog Green and Dog White sectors of Omaha Beach.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>This is an annual tradition at Battles and Book Reviews. \u00a0This year is the 72nd anniversary of the Allied Landings at Normandy in France during WWII.
